Frequently Asked Questions
Animal Testing
At Nature Clean we’ve been against animal cruelty since the early 1960’s! None of our products have ever been tested on animals and nor will they ever be. We indicate this on our product labels with PETA’s leaping bunny logo. We at Nature Clean avoid using any animal derived ingredients as well.
Ethoxylated Alcohol
Although these alcohols can be naturally derived, there is a concern surrounding the process used to create them. Ethylene oxide is added during this process and free ethylene oxide can be released. This free ethylene oxide is usually contaminated with 1,4 Dioxane. The FDA classified this as a probable human carcinogen and a known skin irritant. Under California Proposition 65 it is classified as cancer causing. Since it is considered a by-product of ethylene oxide reacting with other ingredients, 1,4-dioxane is considered a contaminant and therefore does not have to be included on product labeling. As a result, consumers are largely unaware of its presence in many household products. Ethoxylated Alcohol is a primary surfactant in most traditional laundry liquid formulas and all liquid laundry pod formulas. All Nature Clean laundry liquids and hand dish washing liquids are “ethoxylation free” Unfortunately ethoxylated alcohols are required in all “Automatic” Dishwasher detergents. Nature Clean auto dishwasher products however are continually tested to be free of I,4 dioxane.

EcoLogo (3rd Party Certified)
Nature Clean products are 3 rd party verified by UL/EcoLogo and bear this logo on the product labels. This ensures that the environmental claims we are making are true. It also ensures a certain level of efficacy for the performance of our products. Over the years there has been an evolution of the logos from left to right and there will be labels with different versions.

Why Are Some Products Not Certified
There are a couple of reasons:
- (a) No category exist for this particular product.
- (b) Over the years EcoLogo has been reviewing their criteria and in this process categories are discontinued or may no longer be relevant.
Gluten Free
There is no medical/scientific evidence to suggest that individuals can actually be affected by cleaning or cosmetic products containing gluten based ingredients. Nature Clean’s products have been independently tested as “gluten free”. The one exception is our Calming Bath Bar. It does contain oatmeal as an exfoliant.
Natural
As of this time there is no regulated definition as to what “natural” means. At Nature Clean we define it to mean only containing ingredients derived from plants and minerals. The percentage (%) of these natural ingredients are reflected on the front of our labels.
Preservatives
Although we’re able to offer many products that are preservative free, it is common sense that if a product contains water it can be a breeding ground for mold and bacteria. That is why you’ll notice that none of our powdered products contain preservatives. Preservatives are used to prevent growth of microbes in the product itself. As cleaning products become milder to surfaces they also can become “milder” to microbes and may even become food for them. A cleaning product contaminated with growing microbes can develop off odors and lose its ability to clean as the microbes eat the surfactants and other active components of the cleaning product. Preservatives are used to protect the cleaning product and ensure it remains effective.

In the cosmetic and household cleaning industry (and here at Nature Clean) this is defined as containing no alcohol sulfates (Sodium Lauryl sulfate / SLS) or alcohol ether sulfate (Sodium Laureth Sulfate/ Ether Sulfate / SLES). These ingredients are known skin irritants. Currently, there is no government definition for “sulfate free”
Unscented/Fragrance Free
We at Nature Clean define unscented as containing no added fragrances/perfumes, nor any masking agents. Our unscented products will have the characteristic odor profile of the natural raw ingredients.
There is no government regulations/definition for Unscented.
Phosphate Free
All Nature Clean products are free of phosphates. Phosphates in our lakes, rivers and streams can lead to eutrophication which causes a bloom in plant and algae and death of animal life due to lack of oxygen.
