The Truth About 1,4-Dioxane

What is 1,4-Dioxane

Ethoxylation, is a process used to provide mildness to harsh ingredients, requires the use of a potentially cancer-causing petrochemical called ethylene oxide. This process can generate 1,4-Dioxane as a by-product. You won’t see it listed as an ingredient in products because it’s a by-product.

Do Nature Clean products contain 1,4-Dioxane?

Natureclean® began moving away from any ingredients that might have cross contamination issues with Dioxane over three years ago. At that time it became apparent that the concerns around this issue had been substantiated. Since then we’ve reformulated every single product that may have had a concern. The last of the products to be reformulated over the three year period were completed Feb 27th, 2008. All our Household Cleaners, Laundry and Dishwashing products produced after that date are guaranteed not to contain any ingredients that could have potential contamination with 1,4-Dioxane. We print production code dates on all our products.

Some of our products will continue to use Ethoxylates derived from plant source, but the Ethoxylates we use are continually tested and proven not to contain 1,4-Dioxane.

Natureclean® products were developed to improve people’s health. Our belief is that our company should never defend one ingredient over another. If new and valid information is brought to our attention about the health concerns of a particular ingredient, we simply move away from it.  This is what our company did so many years ago with respect to Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, and it’s what we’ve done for any ingredients that may have 1,4-Dioxane cross contamination concerns.
