You likely know someone who has been affected by some form of cancer. It is estimated that in 2011, 23 400 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so take some time this month to learn about the disease, how to reduce your risk, and find out how you can get involved in raising awareness and finding a cure.
What is Breast Cancer?
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among Canadian women, so it especially important that you understand what it is and how to prevent it. Starting as a malignant tumor in the cells of the breast, breast cancer can spread to other parts of the body in time. This type of cancer occurs when your cells grow in an abnormal way. These abnormal cells can form lumps or tumors in the breast. The disease occurs mostly in women, but men get it too. On average, 64 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer every day.

How to Protect Yourself
Breast cancer can affect women of all ages. Many factors, including genetics, environment and even lifestyle habits may play a role in developing the disease. You can reduce you and your loved ones’ risk of getting breast cancer by regularly conducting a self exam and note changes in your breasts and the surrounding areas. Bring any changes to the attention of your doctor – though most changes are not cancerous, it is best to have them checked out anyway just to be safe.
To reduce your risk of breast cancer, it is important that you be physically active, avoid smoking and second-hand smoke, have regular screenings (especially if you are over 50), and eat healthy. Although there is no specific diet, eating a diet low in animal fat and high in whole grains, vegetable and fruits will ensure the best results. Check out our website for an awesome recipe full of beta-carotene, which may reduce your risk of developing cancer.
