Each November, thousands of men and women participate in Movember, sporting moustaches to raise funds and awareness for men's health, specifically prostate cancer. Last year, Canadian Mo Bros and Mo Sistas raised over $22.3 million CAD!
All funds raised over the month of November will support Movember's men's health partner, Prostate Cancer Canada and the Prostate Cancer Canada and the Movember Foundation, which is an awareness and education program about men's health.
Movember is dedicated to changing attitudes towards men's health, sparking conversations about health risks and encouraging men to act upon them, thereby increasing chances of early detection, diagnosis and treatment. Compared to women, men's health issues have lower levels of awareness, understanding, funding and support. During the month of November, men sporting moustaches become a walking, talking billboard for men's health issues.
One of the most serious health risks men face is prostate cancer. Prostate cancer occurs when cells in the prostate start to grow uncontrollably. However, during the early stages of this cancer, there are few symptoms or even none at all. Without regular screening, it is extremely difficult to detect.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men - 1 in 7 Canadian men will be diagnosed with this type of cancer. If detected in its earliest stages, prostate cancer is over 90% curable. This is why it is especially important for men to have regular screening and checkups.
This month is a perfect opportunity for both men and women to schedule a health checkup and discuss health issues with family and friends to promote awareness.
