What is Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (ALES)?
Ammonium Laureth Sulfate is the ammonium salt of sulfated ethoxylated lauryl alcohol. It can be derived from coconut. ALES acts as a surfactant (a foaming and cleansing agent) that poses serious health threats. This ingredient is found in car washes, garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers and 90 percent of personal-care products that foam – it’s in most of the cosmetic products we use each day! It has similar properties to Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS).

Why should I be concerned?
Ammonium Laureth Sulfate can cause moderate to severe skin and eye irritation. It can also be contaminated with 1,4-Dioxane a suspected carcinogen. The irritant effects are similar to those produced by other detergents, and the severity of the irritation to increases directly with the concentration of ALES in a product. When combined with other chemicals, ALES can create nitrosamines, which are a potent class of carcinogens. ALES/ALS may also damage skin’s immune system by causing skin layers to separate, inflame and age. It is especially harmful to children - young eyes may not develop properly if exposed to ALES and ALS because proteins are dissolved.

Your pets may also be harmed by Ammonium Laureth Sulafate. Animals exposed to ALS or ALES may experience eye damage, depression, laboured breathing, diarrhea, and severe skin irritation.

How to avoid ALES
There are many options to mass-produced shampoos that contain harmful substances like ALES. Natural and herbal shampoos, soaps, lotions and other personal care products are a great options that are free from harsh detergents and carcinogenic compounds. Nature Clean®’s personal care line can help you reduce or eliminate your exposure to these toxic chemicals with all natural alternatives to the products you use everyday.
