November’s Non-Ingredient of the Month: Cocamide

Cocamide is a chemically-modified form of coconut oil. It forms the structural basis of many surfactants, which act as detergents, emulsifiers and foaming or thickening agents. It is found in many chemicals such as DEA, DEA-CETYL phosphates, DEA OLETH-3 phosphates, Myristamide DEA, Stearamide MEA, Cocamide MEA, Lauramide MEA, Oleamide DEA, and TEA-Lauryl Sulfate. These ingredients can be found in the majority of body care products, including shampoo, hand soap, makeup and facial cleansers to give them a better consistency.

Why should I be concerned?
Cocamide DEA and its variants are suspected of increasing the risk of cancer. It can combine with amines present in cosmetic formulations to form nitrosamines, which are known to be highly carcinogenic. A 1998 study by the NTP (American National Toxicology Program) seriously condemned their use and designated them as possible cancer causing elements.

Studies have shown that DEAs (including cocamide DEA) may directly inhibit fetal brain development in laboratory studies by blocking the absorption of choline, a nutrient required for brain development and maintenance.

Cocamide DEA is also an allergen that may cause contact dermatitis in individuals who are susceptible to skin allergies. The chemical has a high irritation potential.

What are Some Alternatives?
Look for shampoos, soaps and cosmetics that do not contain cocamide. Many manufactures of surfactants are now beginning to offer cocamide DEA alternatives. This means that you don’t have to give up the nice thick consistency or foaming action of the personal care products you use daily! However unlike cocamide, these new types of surfactants are much safer and healthier for you and your family.

Nature Clean’s personal care products are made without Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), DEA, or any of those other skin irritating and toxic chemicals!
