The Fun Stuff!

We all know how difficult it can be to get kids in the habit of washing up - but bath time doesn’t always have to be a chore! It is important to teach your children about the importance of personal hygiene, so why not make it a fun part of their daily routine?

Try incorporating music into your child’s personal care routine. Many of their favourite songs can be used as a guide for how long it should take them to wash up. Singing the alphabet twice is a great way to ensure that a child is brushing their teeth thoroughly (just make sure to sing in your head while you brush!). Don’t forget to remind them that all of their teeth need brushing, even the ones way in the back! You can also sing “Happy Birthday” out loud while washing hands (for about 30 seconds) to make sure they’re squeaky clean. Another favourite song is “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes”, which is perfect for bath time. As you sing together, have your child wash each body part mentioned.

Natural Ingredients Are Important

Did you know that children can absorb up to 200% more substances through their skin than adults? (Princeton Journal – Future of Children).  Many bath products currently on the market for children can contain suspect ingredients.

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics ran a study to evaluate popular children’s bath products for Formaldehyde and 1,4-Dioxane (probable cancer causing agents).  82% of them contained Formaldehyde, 67% contained 1,4-Dioxane and 61% contained both!  These particular ingredients probably won’t show up in a products ingredient listing because they’re byproducts of other ingredient manufacturing (like Sodium Laureth Sulphate or PEGs).  However it is still very important to read ingredient labels and choose products that use natural, safe, gentle ingredients.
