National Asthma Awareness Month

May is National Asthma Awareness Month. So TAKE ACTION and BE AWARE. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease that attacks the airways (respiratory system), making it difficult to breathe. This is a more common disease than it should be, and must not be overlooked. If you have asthma, or know someone who does, you may be more familiar with the symptoms of an attack and how to avoid worsening the effects. If not, a tip everyone should know and remember is how to spot an asthma attack: Especially because a person in the midst of one will not be able to explain what’s going on and what you can do to help. In case you didn’t know the severity of asthma, take a peek at the following stats:

  • There are about 3 million Canadians living with asthma!
  • Approximately 500 Canadians die yearly from asthma
  • 6 out of 10 people with asthma do not have control over their disease/condition
  • 20% of children suffer from respiratory illnesses such as asthma

Be awareif you notice someone coughing, struggling to breathe (like wheezing), and someone who becomes disorientated or easily irritated. Bear in mind the next step after spotting a symptom is to stay calm. Sounds simple right? But it’s not as easy as it sounds. However, this is the most important step. Afterwards, find out if they have an inhaler – most will – and proceed to encourage them to sit up; this will help clear their passageways, allowing more air to flow in. Once the inhaler has been used it should take approximately 10 minutes before the person will breathe normally again and regain control. If symptoms worsen, he or she may need to be taken to the hospital.

A few asthma triggers to be aware of include: smoke, strong scents, mould, pollen, animal dander, extreme temperatures, intense emotions and strenuous exercise. Any one of these, and many more, can cause a person to develop an asthma attack.  So be aware of how people around you react to these triggers.

A great way to avoid unnecessary asthma reaction is to ‘safe proof’ your home. Be conscious of the items you use and surround yourself with. This can really cut down the possibility of an attack. Keep in mind there are now new healthier products and options to choose from.

Try to avoid strongly scented products and those that cause lung irritation. This is also a great tip even for people who aren’t suffering from asthma. Look for unscented and natural products. Remember when buying household products to avoid chlorine and ammonia based cleanser as they can cause severe lung irritations.

When using a spray cleaner in your bathroom or even kitchen, make sure the room is properly ventilated – open doors and windows.  And if you need to let the product sit for while, don’t stick around in the room, get out and then return when ready to finish up.

Dishwashers can be a source of noxious fumes if using gels, powders or tabs that are laden with harsh chemicals like chlorine and synthetic fragrances.  Use unscented, chlorine free alternatives.

So let me ask you this: Are you aware? Ask those around you and pass along the word. If you are looking for ways to bring awareness to your community there are a few different ways you can help. Gather up some initiative and propose and/or host activities in your neighborhood to help educate your community about this disease. For more information and resources, visit www.asthma.ca.
